    Legend and translation

    Θεοτόκε βοήθη / Σεργίῳ πατρικίω.

Mother of God, help Sergios patrikios.

    Commentary

Many similar seals without iconography show an inscription in which the patrikios Sergios [1], invokes for help the Mother of God. They can be all dated to the 7th or 7th/8th c. Most of them differ from our specimen due to the different line breaks. The parallel seals (1) (2) are from a different boulloterion than our seal, but the line breaks are the same; the other seals show different line breaks than ours.
